What is CBD?
The hemp plant contains over 100 known cannabinoids, which occur naturally in hemp. As active substances of the plant, cannabinoids have been used for centuries, especially in the treatment of pain. These cannabinoids include cannabidiol, or CBD for short, which, unlike THC, is legal and has little to no psychoactive effect.

How is CBD oil made?
CBD oil is obtained from industrial hemp, which must not exceed a THC content of 0.3% and therefore has nothing to do with the drug cannabis. First, a CBD extract is obtained from the hemp plant. The process differs depending on the type of CBD oil required. For the highest quality full-spectrum oils, gentle CO₂ extraction is used.
To do this, carbon dioxide gas is put into a so-called supercritical state, in which it is neither liquid nor gaseous and can penetrate the material of the hemp plant. It dissolves compounds from the plant and vaporises itself without leaving any harmful residues.
For isolates, on the other hand, all other compounds are removed until only pure CBD is present. In the course of this process, a solvent is added to the CBD, which can leave residues if the manufacturer does not work properly.
To obtain CBD oil, an oil is added to the CBD extract in the next step in both methods, as cannabinoids are fat-soluble and can thus develop their effect in the body.
Why are some CBD oils more expensive than others?
CBD oils are generally more expensive. This is because the process of extracting cannabinoids from hemp is very complex and commercial hemp is subject to strict regulations, especially in Europe. The price differences between different suppliers result from the following 6 points, among others:
1. biological
The organically certified cultivation of commercial hemp is far more cost-intensive, as numerous requirements have to be followed and fewer measures can be taken to prevent major crop failures. In general, however, the hemp plant is extremely robust and does not require pesticides.
2. cultivation
In order to be considered organic at all, the cultivation of commercial hemp must take place outdoors. In addition, according to European regulations, only certain varieties are allowed for cultivation, which means that farmers have to spend a lot of money on licences for them.
3. full spectrum or isolate
As already mentioned, full-spectrum extracts differ from CBD isolates in the extraction method used to obtain CBD from the hemp plant. In full-spectrum extracts, the entire chemical profile of the hemp is retained, including not only cannabinoids but also flavonoids, high-quality secondary plant substances, and terpenes, the flavourings of the plant.
CBD isolates, on the other hand, contain only pure CBD when produced cleanly. The production process for full-spectrum oils is more cost-intensive and, according to studies, they are the most effective, as all of the plant's compounds work together to achieve a better effect.
4. choice of carrier oil
To help process CBD in the body, CBD extract is dissolved in fat, a carrier oil. Cheaper and more expensive alternatives can influence the flavour and provide additional nutrients, such as hemp oil as a carrier oil. Caution is advised, especially in the case of nut allergies, as nut oils are also used as carrier oils.
Popular high-quality oils include hemp oil, olive oil, avocado oil and MCT oils from coconut and palm kernels, with hemp oil being the most sustainable option.
5. CBD concentration
Often two CBD products from the same supplier and in the same quantity appear with a drastic difference in price. At first glance this leads to confusion, but on closer inspection there is a big difference - the CBD concentration.
After all, a CBD oil with a content of 10% contains twice as much CBD extract as one with only 5% and is therefore more expensive.
